Ovid-Elsie Area Schools provides our students with the skills they need to succeed in the real world. This feature helps show how we do that, in addition to being able to keep in touch with some of our past graduates. Today’s feature is Jennifer Elias.

Attending Ovid-Elsie schools helped to shape both my career and my life in a number of ways. Every teacher that I had throughout my whole experience at Ovid-Elsie, made an impact on my life, not only by teaching me useful information but also by showing how much they truly cared about their students and reaching out to them. Even after I graduated (2007), I continue to keep in touch with my former teachers and mentors. The closeness of all of the people and places within Ovid-Elsie, is surely something that I miss now, living in a larger city.

Having the ability in Ovid to take classes for college credit was a huge advantage - especially in making the transition from a smaller school to college. Not only did Advanced Writing, Public Speaking, and independent studies provide me with the opportunity to further push my skills but it also provided me with an extra level of knowledge and confidence in my first year of college. Such things as paper writing, public speaking, as well as concept development were all easier for me, because of the classes I had taken at Ovid-Elsie.

As an artist, I also derive a lot of my inspiration from being from a small town such as Ovid or Elsie. I feel that there is a certain "small town aesthetic" that is seen within my work - a certain look and color palette that only small towns produce.

It is hard for me to express just exactly how much I appreciate all that the teachers of Ovid-Elsie have done for me as well as all of the other students. I owe a big thank you to everyone that has offered, and continues to offer, support and encouragement. I am proud to be an Ovid-Elsie alumni - which is one of the many reasons that Ovid-Elsie will continue to play a big part in my life.

Should you know of anyone who would make a good feature for this column, please send contact information to: Bonnie Ott, Ovid-Elsie High School, 8989 Colony Road, Elsie, MI 48831, or e-mail it to bonnieo@oe.edzone.net. We look forward to hearing from our Ovid-Elsie Alumni!
